InsidePunk Exclusive: Malese Jow Interview

Posted by Corey | 11.28.2007

malese jow

We recently spoke with Malese Jow. You may recognize her as Geena from the hit Nickelodeon TV show, Unfabulous. Malese is not only busy with an acting career, she’s now starting up a music career as well!

If you haven’t added her to myspace or heard any of her songs, you should head on over to www.myspace.com/malesemusic. She’s got a lot of talent and a great voice! She was nice enough to take the time to answer the questions below.

How have you been Malese, and what have you been up to as of late?

I’ve been great! I’m actually in the final few girls being considered for a new Nickelodeon pilot, and we had a producer’s session today. I’m also planning to go back to New Jersey to work with my producer on writing and recording more demos… hopefully soon.

Do you have any future tour plans scheduled?

That will have to come after I get signed with a label - hopefully soon! I can’t wait, though!

Approximately how many demos do you have recorded, and are you working on a CD yet?

I have several demo songs that we recorded in the past with other producers, but I must say that the two newest ones actually capture my “sound” the way I want it to come across. I co-wrote “No Better” and want to continue having creative input into the songs that I perform in the future - not just singing someone else’s material.

What artist or band influences you the most?

I’m inspired by new bands that try new sounds - it’s amazing to see what’s out there! All-around I would have to say that Paramore has the whole package of what inspires me the most.

Who personally inspires you the most?

Personally I would have to say my family (my mom and siblings) inspires me the most. We’ve been through everything together (good and bad) and they always keep me grounded. I go to them for everything.

As a kid, did you dream of being a vocalist or did you want to pursue an acting career?

Singing was always something I did for fun - and it came so naturally to me, but I found that acting was such a challenge - it keeps me on my toes and I never get bored with new scripts. Now as I’ve gotten older, I’m realizing that singing is much more complex than I ever imagined before. I think the writing & recording process is just as intense as acting and I can’t wait to actually do an entire CD.

What’s it like being only 16 years old and already accomplishing so much?

I don’t really see myself as an accomplished person. I just worked hard and got opportunities to do what I love. I’ve been blessed.

You’ve just filmed the 3rd season of Unfabulous, correct? Is this the last season? Do you have any other upcoming tv show or film appearances?

The third and final season of Unfabulous wrapped last year. As for other projects, I’ll be guest starring on Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” as Ruby Donohue - it’s episode 13, but I’m not sure when it will be airing. I’m also a supporting lead in Bratz - the Movie, which just came out on DVD November 27.

Now I know that your music appeals to all audiences but you have somewhat of a younger fan base due to your acting career. Do you have any advice that you would like to share with them?

I always like to encourage kids to pursue what they’re passionate about. If it’s acting, get involved in your school’s plays, etc and if it’s singing, do what I did back in Oklahoma and start offering to sing the National Anthem at charity events, etc. I entered talent competitions and showcases just to get experience on stage - if you love to perform you can find opportunities everywhere! It really helped a lot!

Thank you very much for taking time to answer these questions! Is there anything else that you would like to share with us before we say goodbye?

The messages and comments from my fans are really encouraging and I appreciate all of them! Word of mouth is the only way my music is getting heard right now, so I’m thankful for myspace and the internet in jump-starting my music career.

Thanks Corey!
